To make a loveable school (industrious, inventive, liveable, documentable and communicable, a place of research, learning, re-cognition and reflection) where children, and teachers, and parents, feel well: this is our landing place.Loris Malaguzzi
What do we mean by “documentation” in Reggio Emilia’s infant-toddler centres and preschools? Why is it such a fundamental working tool for all those working in the field of education? What multiple meanings does it have, and how many?
This course of professional learning takes us through a theme that constitutes one of the pillars of the Reggio Emilia Approach.
Documentation, in the educational experience of Reggio Emilia’s municipal infant-toddler centres and preschools is an integral, structuring part of educational theories and didactics; it gives value to, and makes explicit, visible, and evaluable, the nature of subjective (single) and group learning processes in children and adults identified through observation, and makes them into a common shared legacy. It is, therefore, a fundamental strategy and working tool for all those working in educational contexts.
Considered to be a “public place”, documentation gives substance to the idea of infant-toddler centres and preschools that elaborate a culture of childhood and of education, with a democratic process.
This professional learning course we propose will take participants through the theme of documentation with all its multiplicity of meanings:
- the collection of documents necessary for design / progettazione
- interpretation as an act that is conscious and shared
- the production of materials for communication
- a tool and strategy for the development of teacher learning and self-learning
