The city of Reggio Emilia has chosen education from birth as a lever for affirming democracy, achieving good quality of life, and building a society based on equity and solidarity. In 2020 we celebrate the centenary of the birth of Loris Malaguzzi, inspirer of the Reggio Emilia Approach now known throughout the world. For this centenary Reggio Emilia wants to take responsibility for furthering innovation in education and, therefore, the elaboration of a new humanism, through permanent reflection and debate, to include the commitment and voices of those who contribute every day to the city project of “Education 365 days”.

It will do this through a programme titled “No way. The hundred is there”, gathering local, national and international initiatives, to underline relations and inter-dependencies in the history of Reggio Emilia’s education services between movements in society, particularly women’s movements, local administrators, and Loris Malaguzzi  and his collaborators.

A defining point of the programme will be the study conference “If our eye jumps over the wall. In search of new paradigms for education.” Scheduled for February 21-22, the conference will coincide with Malaguzzi’s birthday on February 23, a date that has been celebrated since 1995 as an occasion for launching new projects, and communicating the results of projects in their closing phases.

The Loris Malaguzzi Centenary is an opportunity to draw greater attention to this annual event, and to formulate a working hypothesis for creating synthesis from the fruits of Malaguzzi’s work, and that of his collaborators, while projecting the city’s educational experience into the future. The conference title references the title of the first exhibition by Reggio Emilia schools in 1980, and will see the presence of experts and academics.

A rich programme of  events is planned throughout the city for 20-23 February.
