International Study group – April 2019
the reggio emilia approach to education
I think that it’s a mistake to take any school approach and assume, like a flower, that you can take it from one soil and put it into another one. That never works. This doesn’t mean at all that [we] can’t learn a tremendous amount from it, but we have to reinvent it. … We have to figure out what are the aspects which are most important to us and what kind of soil we need here to make those aspects thrive.
Howard Gardner, 1997
Reggio Children manages an extensive network of cultural exchanges both nationally and internationally, which take on concrete form in activities in a number of specific areas, all interrelated. Research, in addition to being one of the founding activities of Reggio Children, is the approach that characterizes each area of work.
Reggio Children is promoting for the spring 2019 a professional development initiative on the Reggio Emilia Approach, a study opportunity for deeper investigation into the concepts, contents, and values that are part of the educational project of the Municipal Infant-toddler Centers and Preschools of Reggio Emilia.
The course has the aim of investigating the different professional educational profiles from many different points of view: responsibilities, roles, organization, strategies of work, collegiality, professional development and self professional development, research and projections of the work.
Professional development is characterized as a process aimed at building understanding and awareness of the meanings and methods of education, the central qualifying points of the educational project, and the specific competencies of the various professional roles.
