Media, Children, and Families


In the spring of 2009, CORECOM Emilia-Romagna, the Regional Commission for Communications, commissioned Reggio Children to conduct a study aimed at gaining further understanding about the role and significance of the media in the life of children from two to six years old and for the adults involved in their care and education.


Following an initial phase of knowledge-gathering in the contexts by means of surveys with conversations among the children and observations on the topic, more in-depth projects were designed and carried out in the infant-toddler centers and preschools.


The aim of the study was to develop a research-professional development tool, which was then disseminated and circulated in the Emilia-Romagna Region over the course of the 2010-2011 school year to promote greater awareness and the responsible use of the media in children and adults, also by fostering a better understanding of the Italian Code of Self-regulation for TV and Minors.


The study involved two municipal preschools in Reggio Emilia, a cooperative infant-toddler center in Reggio Emilia (Coopselios), and a municipal combined infant-toddler center and preschool in Boretto, in the province of Reggio Emilia (Progettinfanzia).
