A school as a learning community

It is indisputable that schools should have the right to their own environment, their own architecture, their own conceptualization and utilization of spaces, forms and functions.

Loris Malaguzzi, 1983

This declaration is at the basis of a sensitive dialogue between pedagogy, architecture and design that has developed over the years in Reggio Emilia’s system of education services through research, publications and workshops, and that has built up – in the infant-toddler centres and preschools – a precious culture of inhabiting which we consider an integral part of education.

“A school as a learning community” project is part of this journey, promoted by the Reggio Children – Loris Malaguzzi Centre Foundation as a further contribution to research on spaces of education and school, and for the completion of the cultural project of the Preschool and Primary School

at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre, where a single, unified journey from 3 to 11 years is realised, and which is offered as a space of the possible and a place of life.

The purpose of this project is not only to extend a school, it is proposed as a laboratory which aims at the definition of a new language capable of giving shape to a precise spatial identity, and able to marry innovative structures and spaces with experimentation in socio-constructive teaching/learning dynamics.

Seven international studios: Ecosistema Urbano, 70°N arkitektur, Francesco Librizzi Studio, Giancarlo Mazzanti, Carlo Ratti Associati, Raumlabor and ZPZ Partners, were invited to participate in a competition in the summer of 2012.

The seven studios have developed their concepts by participating in a workshop of technical and scientific nature in Reggio Emilia, aimed to promote the encounter between the urban context and the educational experience of infant-toddler centres and preschools, knowledge of the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre and the School subject of enlargement.

The concepts developed by each participant have been evaluated by a Technical Committee, composed by architects and education experts, that chose the most appropriate project submitted in relation to guidelines developed and explained in the call for proposals.

The project chosen by the jury for the development of the definitive project is by Spanish studio Ecosistema Urbano; the work of Francesco Librizzi Studio received a special mention.

The development of the final project is going through a participatory process involving parents, teachers, atelieristas, educators of the School at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre and staff of Reggio Children.

The Reggio Children – Loris Malaguzzi Centre Foundation committed to the winner the execution of the final project, which will be delivered by spring 2013, when the Foundation will donate it to the Istituzione Preschools and Infant-toddler Centres of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia.

In the summer of 2013, the Istituzione Preschools and Infant-toddler Centres of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, with a public tender, will entrust the execution of works for the enlargement of the School.
